While the ingredients going into these salads may sound a little bit weird, there’s no reason why these crazy combinations can’t be tremendously tasty too. With the BBQ season here again, why not surprise and impress your garden party guests this summer with a salad that truly is extraordinary!
Broccoli Bacon Raisin Salad
Broccoli, bacon, raisins, chopped onions and sunflower seeds come together to create a sweet and crunchy salad. A sugar-infused mayonnaise dressing brings the whole ensemble together. Almonds can be a great alternative to the sunflower seeds, and if you want a broccoli salad with bite, use horseradish mayo.
Citrus and Pomegranate Salad
BBC Food teamed up with the creator of Reggae Reggae Sauce to create this citrus salad made from orange, grapefruit, onion, fresh mint leaves and pomegranate seeds. Needless to say, you’d expect the flamboyant Levi Roots to add a little extra zing to his salad. This comes in the form of a chilli-honey dressing and some freshly ground black pepper. Levi isn’t the only celebrity TV chef to be enthralled by the charms of a citrus salad. Over in the USA, Martha Stewart has a similar recipe (pictured below) using poached cranberries on her website.
Grilled Peach Salad
The perfect summer salad, this grilled peach salad is a sweet, salty, savoury and bitter taste sensation in a single mouthful. Balsamic vinegar, basil, lemon juice and zest, mint, olive oil, pepper, pesto, red paper flakes, roughly chopped garlic, salt and toasted pine nuts enrich the flavour of the caramelised peaches. Baby arugula and fresh mozzarella are the other main ingredients. After grilling, remember to cool the peaches down to room temperature before adding them to the salad.
Nothing weird about a potato salad right? Well, this potato salad poked fun at the Internet phenomenon of crowdsourcing people to raise money for special projects. Last year, nearly 7,000 people pledged the grand total of $55,492 to Zack Danger Brown on Kickstarter so he could go off and make a potato salad for himself. Apparently, this prankster spent the bulk of the funds raised on a party, appropriately titled Potato Stock.
Roasted Grape and Kabocha Kale Salad
Strange But Good, the creators of this unusual salad, reckon you’ll never want to go back to using ordinary dried fruit on a salad again once you’ve sampled the delicious delights of a roasted grape. And what type of vinegar goes well with this dish? Champagne vinegar, of course! Other seemingly crazy recipes on their highly entertaining blog include Chocolate Protein Red Cabbage Ice Cream, Brown Beer Hummus and a Green Protein Frappuccino (with chilled coffee, cinnamon and spinach!).
